Cambridgeshire South
Conservative hold
Cambridgeshire is a growing county, and outside the large urban areas of Peterborough and Cambridge a very Conservative one. This applies to all the rural seats, including this, where Sawston is the largest single community boasting a population of just 7,000, but where there are hundreds of villages on the flat lands among the large and generally prosperous farms. It will remain safely Tory, and a useful base for a fast rising former Central Office star, Andrew Lansley.
Andrew Lansley, Shadow Cabinet member responsible for policy review, is a former party apparatchik who as Conservative Research Director co-authored the 'Double Whammy' slogan of 1992 and the equally successful - if-on-a-low-turnout - Euro-election campaign of 1999. He was previously a civil servant for eight years, where he served as Norman Tebbit's principal private secretary. Born 1956 and educated at Brentwood School and Exeter University, he initially backed Michael Howard in the 1997 ballot, but with the look of a career politician about him and with fashionably classless speech, he is taken to be a potential future leader.
