Canterbury
Conservative hold
The home city of the Primate of England and his most famous of English cathedrals is still held by a Conservative MP, although it is a long time since the Church of England could be accurately referred to as the Tory party at prayer. In fact Canterbury itself is the least Conservative part of the seat, with substantial Labour and Liberal Democrat representation on the local council, and Julian Brazier could ensure a majority only in the surrounding villages and the seaside resort of Whitstable; and even so, his victory was scarcely convincing, with less than 40pc of the vote and a majority of under 4,000. Canterbury may yet have another tale to tell next General Election time.
Julian Brazier, MP here since 1987, is as close as the Commons comes to a dead ringer for Black Adder comic actor, Hugh Lawrie. Very tall, born (1953) into a military family and appropriately educated at Wellington and then at Brasenose College Oxford, he is a Redwood-backing Eurosceptic and as a Catholic opposes embryo research and abortion. His faintly loopy air evokes the boyish enthusiasm of a character from Enid Blyton.
