Cumbernauld & Kilsyth
Labour hold
The new town of Cumbernauld is set on a windy hill 15 miles north east of Glasgow. To outsiders it is probably still best known as the setting for Bill Forsyth's film Gregory's Girl. For parliamentary purposes it is linked with the smaller, older town of Kilsyth on the northern bank of the river Kelvin. This has always been a safe Labour seat, although the SNP have been active challengers in the local elections here (now North Lanarkshire unitary authoiity), but they did not come especially close (14pc) to Labour in the Edinburgh Parliament elections of 1999 and Rosemary McKenna looks safe.
Rosemary McKenna won here in 1997 having been a local councillor for 13 years. A Blairite moderniser in a Scottish Labour Party stuffed with Old Labour, she helped screen Labour’s candidates for the Scottish Parliament and so helped create the Denis Canavan problem and a nearly-lost byelection at Falkirk. A keen advocate of a devolved parliament and of gender balance within it, she also backs ‘welfare to work’ from experience of her own impoverished childhood. Born 1941, educated at St Augustine’s (RC) Comprehensive School and Notre Dame College of Education, she was a primary school teacher for 20 years, after 7 years as a secretary, and is one of Blair’s Scottish pit props.
