Ealing, Acton & Shepherd's Bush
Labour hold
Labour's MP for this rather odd seat crossing the border between the London Boroughs of Ealing and Hammersmith/Fulham is the Chairman of the Parliamentary Party, Clive Soley, re-elected by a hair's breadth in late November 2000 after challenges from Tony Lloyd and the Left-winger John McDonnell who accused him of being too subservient to the New Labour hierarchy. In the long run his seat may be split by the Boundary Commission, as Ealing was scheduled in their provisional recommendations for North London (March 2001) to take three divisions of its own, recreating a Tory-inclined Acton division, but this is unlikely to be enacted for the next couple of General Elections, and Soley will win next time by more than the six vote margin of endorsement his fellow Commoners gave him.
Clive Soley, who was re-elected Chairman of the PLP by only six votes in November 2000, has been MP in this area since 1979. Born 1939 and educated at Downsall Secondary Modern, Ilford and later Newbattle Abbey College, Scotland and Strathclyde University, he worked as a probation officer for nine years. Originally a soft left-winger, keen on a united Ireland and a responsible press, he has enjoyed more prominence since 1997 as a bridge between Blair and the large majority, as deviser of attempts to block Livingstone's mayoral candidacy, and as screener of would-be Labour parliamentary candidates.
