Erewash
Labour hold
Labour's Elizabeth Blackman won Erewash for Labour, defeating Angela Knight, by approximately the same margin as Tony Blair's party pasted John Major's naturally, and there is no reason to believe that this East Midlands seat based on Ilkeston (which once had its own seat named after it) and Long Eaton (from the former Derbyshire SE) will deviate significantly from the national norm next time either. In the 1999 borough elections, the most recent actual voting here, Labour won 13 wards to the Tories' six.
Elizabeth Blackman, born 1949, educated at Carlisle County High School for Girls, Prince Henry's Grammar School, Otley, and Clifton College of Further Education, Nottingham, is a standard 1997 issue New Labour MP as a first time candidate, off an all-women short list. She is a former school teacher, local councillor, and loyalist backbencher, who has done little to trouble the scorers. Troubling her could be the Conservatives' Gregor MacGregor, an operational review executive with multinational Williams plc, born 1955, educated at Milton Abbey School, Dorset and Cardiff University.
