Forest of Dean
Labour hold
The incomplete candidature pattern in local elections offers limited guidance to the latest chances of the parties in the Forest of Dean, but it might still be worth pointing out that Labour won 29 of the 50 seats in the district council elections of May 1999, and that Labour would notionally have won the seat even in 1992 when they lost the General Election - according to the official figures. However, there is evidence in the small recorded "swing" of just 5.6pc that in this rare case the academic team responsible for calculating notional results for the new constituencies had they existed in 1992 actually got it wrong. The one certain thing is that Diana Organ's majority last time was 12.6pc, which would be within the Tories' grasp in an even year.
Diana Organ, a lively, personable, short-white-haired school teacher, won here in 1997 after trying in 1992. Locally-focused on questions of transport, housing, fuel tax, opencast mining and beef farming, she was born 1952 and educated at Edgbaston Church of England School for Girls, St Hugh's College, Oxford, and Bath and Bristol Universities. She has campaigned against unnecessary hysterectomies.
