Keighley
Labour hold
The Conservatives won four of the six wards within Keighley constituency on Bradford City Council in the most recent elections of May 2000, and with its very solidly middle-class and substantial rural element including the spa town of Ilkley and its neighbour Ben Rhydding and even the Brontes' Haworth up in the moors, now a tourist trap, this West Yorkshire seat looks like a tough challenge for the left-wing sitting MP Ann Cryer. It is also in the range of key marginals as far as the national choice of government is concerned, requiring a swing of more than sixpc from 1997 for a Tory regain. All this makes it one of the most clear, interesting, and even photogenic locations of the struggle around the political divide in 2001. Journalists and television teams take note!
Ann Cryer, born 1939 and so one of Blair's grannies, was elected in 1997 and with her newly-elected son John, trod, in her late husband Bob's footsteps, the path of righteous rebellion against the government, from lone parent benefit cuts in 1997 to air traffic control privatisation in 2000. Of 183 new Labour MPs in 1997, she (and her son, John) were among the mere six who joined the hard left Campaign Group on reaching Westminster. A campaigner against forced marriages of British-Asian women, and educated at secondary modern school in Darwen and at Bolton and Keighley technical colleges, after working as a Post Office clerk she became her husband's secretary, later writing an affectionate memoir of him.
