Bedfordshire Mid
Conservative hold
The rural parts of Bedfordshire are very Conservative and this constituency centres around small market towns such as Ampthill and the expanding commuting developments of Flitwick. In spite of a 14pc swing to Labour in 1977, Jonathan Sayeed still won by 7,000, which seems insurance enough for any year - no matter how disastrous for his party nationally.
Jonathan Sayeed, the Conservatives' only non-white MP, does not - as half-Indian - wish to be so categorised. He was elected here in 1997, having earlier made his name as the Tory who beat Tony Benn at Bristol South East in 1983, a seat he retained until 1992. Born 1948 and educated at Wolverstone Hall School and Dartmouth Naval College, he served in the Navy for seven years before founding a shipping company, and - after his 1992 defeat - a PR business. Ranked among the Eurosceptics, especially on the single currency, he takes a cautious stance on military intervention in Iraq and Kosovo, and is concerned about the vulnerability to terrorists of the former Soviet Union's nuclear arsenal. He sought disclosure of religious affiliation in the 2001 Census.
