Sleaford & North Hykeham
Conservative hold
Sleaford is a medium sized mid Lincolnshire market town, and well entitled to a constituency name of its own, but North Hykeham is a rather featureless suburb of Lincoln strung out along the A46 Fosse Way south west towards Newark and Leicester. It does have some 9,000 electors but it retains the character of a peripheral housing estate rather than of an overgrown village. It must be said that it is very lucky to be dignified with inclusion in the title; consider some places which are not currently mentioned in constituency titles: Kidderminster, Barnstaple, Dorking, Oswestry, Ilkeston, Northallerton, Accrington, Chester-le-Street, Nelson and Colne, Whitby, Port Talbot, Arbroath, Larne, Enniskillen . . .In any case North Hykeham's inlcusion in this seat did have an effect, not here, which is Conservative anyway, but in Lincoln itself, from which its removal helped the Labour attempt to register a gain.
Douglas Hogg, a chip off the old blockhead as a mix of first rate brains and an immature personality, is the eldest son of Lord Hailsham (Quintin Hogg) and will become, when his nonagenarian father departs this earthly life, the 3rd Viscount Hailsham, with (under the Blairite dispensation) no interruption to his Commons career. Elected first in 1979 for Mrs Thatcher's native heath of Grantham, he is not of her ilk, nor equally of Hague's, and so in 1997 he backed Clarke and then retreated to the Inns of Court. Deep-fried as Agriculture Minister by the BSE crisis, slight, lisping and with the rudeness of the unself-aware and the charm of the prep school bully, he was born 1945 and followed his father via Eton and Christ Church to Lincoln's Inn.
