Wallasey
Labour hold
Merseyside has moved very dramatically to the left in recent decades, and there is nowhere a better example than Wallasey. Labour did not win it in 1945 or 1966, but they did when Labour lost the General Election in 1992, and in 1997 Angela Eagle increased her majority to an unheard of 19,000. They did recover the marginal wards of Liscard, Moreton and New Brighton here on the north Wirral in May 2000, and never lost the support of Wallasey itself, but it also includes the inner area of Seacombe near the declining Birkenhead docks and the council estate of Leasowe. Overall it does not look like a Labour stronghold physically, though, but the culture in this part of north west England has turned irreversibly away from the Conservative party.
Angela Eagle, a Junior Social Security minister elected in 1992, is half of the first set of parliamentary twins, unless there were others in Simon de Montfort's parliament or the Witenagemot. The only disclosed lesbian MP, she was born in 1961, attended Formby High School and St. John's College Oxford, and worked for the public sector union COHSE for eight years. A Beckett-voter in 1994 and now situated at the leftward end of the Blairite spectrum, albeit as a replacement for a Militant-supporting candidate in Wallasey in 1992, she is blessed with a sharp-tongued acidic manner and piping voice, and plays chess and cricket.
