Weaver Vale
Labour hold
A new and extra seat created in Cheshire in 1997, Weaver Vale gathers together diverse territory in the west-centre of the county. Essentially it looks like a barbell, with two Labour ends in the west and east outweighing a more Conservative centre. The west portion consists of the suburbs of Runcorn, the east of the area around the chemical industry town of Northwich, and the centre of more rural area around Frodsham and Helsby. The seat is a creation of mathematical necessity rather than a logical and cohesive community, but Labour and Mike Hall MP will not be too worried about that.
Mike Hall, A Whip and previously the archetypal Labour teacher-councillor, was elected in 1992 for Warrington South, where his experience as leader of Warrington Council (1985-92) led him to advocate as an MP strengthened unitary local government. Born 1952, he attended St. Damian's (RC) Secondary Modern, Ashton-under-Lyne, Padiham College of Higher Education, and Manchester University, and taught for 15 years. A Prescott, not Blair, voter in 1994, he introduced legislation to curb puppy-farming in 1997.
