Worsley
Labour hold
Worsley is itself a desirable residential area and known as such throughout this north western quadrant of Greater Manchester, but the political tone of the seat is given by less affluent communities such as Tyldesley and Little Hulton, and despite a somewhat lower swing than average in 1997 it still sent Terry Lewis back to parliament with a majority of near on 18,000.
Terry Lewis, MP since 1983, is a left-winger who was excelled in his defiance of the Labour whip by only five other MPs in the 1992-97 House. He was born in 1935 and Catholic-educated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary Modern, Salford. Previously a power station engineer, he has resisted the Blair government on lone parent benefit cuts, student grants, predatory pricing of the Murdoch press, the prime ministerial power to nominate life peers, pensions linked to earnings, incapacity benefit cuts, and air traffic control privatisation - and all that without actually being in the Campaign Group. Prurient on pornography and tobacco, he once called out to Ann Widdecombe, "Make it quick; your broomstick's been clamped!"
