Bristol South
Labour hold
Always the safest Labour seat in Bristol, this was the constituency of the "austerity" Chancellor in Attlee's government, Sir Stafford Cripps, and more recently of their chief whip Michael Cocks. The seat includes many of the city's peripheral council estates, such as Hartcliffe, which Cocks (who died in March 2001) took into his title when he entered the Lords, and Bishopsworth, Whitchurch and Filwood (not to be confused with the Rolls Royce aircraft engine manufacturing Filton, which is in North West the other side of the city). South stretches inwards through the more middle class Knowle to the more inner city terraces of Bedminster: appropriately enough the best place in Bristol to find a B & B, as well as Bristol City FC.
Dawn Primarolo, MP here since 1987, is one of the surprise ministerial successes of the Blair government. Originally - but no longer - a Campaign Grouper and on paper one of the most leftwing members, with a background of poll tax non-payment, Gulf War rebellion, resister of OMOV, and - as Tony Benn's deaconess-on-earth - toppler of Benn's Bristol nemesis, the rightwing Chief Whip, Michael Cocks. A Treasury minister since 1997, she has transmuted from 'Red Dawn' to 'Rosy Pink', but doesn't think she's sold out, claiming that being in government "certainly beats Opposition." Her primary school teacher deliberate mode of speech doubtless lies behind the soubriquet 'Dumb Spice,' and a former Tory MP's barb that "her backside is so much more appealing than her mind."
